Nord Stream 2 releases 90 000 young Atlantic salmon

Nord Stream 2, the developer of the twin pipeline to supply Russian natural gas to the EU market through the Baltic Sea, released 90 000 young Atlantic salmon into rivers in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland as compensation for potential temporary damage to fisheries during construction of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline in Russian waters. This initiative is part of the complex Environmental and Community Initiatives Strategy developed by Nord Stream 2 for Russia, and is being implemented in co-operation with FGBU Glavrybvod and under the control of the Northwest branch of the Federal Fishery Agency.
"Nord Stream 2 is an important project for the Leningrad region. We are pleased to continue the joint work between the Government of the Leningrad Region and Nord Stream 2 on important matters such as environmental protection under the relevant co-operation agreement signed in February 2018. Activities on release of valuable fish juveniles will have a positive effect on the conservation of the biodiversity of the Baltic Sea," said Sergey Serdyukov, Chief Technical Officer at Nord Stream 2 AG.
Nord Stream 2 called on the assistance of the State Research Institute of Freshwater Fishing Industries (GosNIORKH) to study the condition of aquatic and biological resources in the Narva Bay and the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, the construction technologies to be used and any possible impacts. The main impact will be an area of increased turbidity, of various concentrations. Calculations were made for different hydro-meteorological situations during the development of the project's Environmental Impact Assessment. The results have shown that the impact of construction activities will be local and temporary and that the turbidity disappears quickly when the cause is removed. However, it does require appropriate compensation. An assessment of the potential impact and a set of compensatory measures in the form of the release of valuable fish juveniles, including the calculation of the number to be released, were approved as part of the positive conclusion of the State environmental expert review issued by the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Use (Rosprirodnadzor).
Atlantic salmon and brown trout juveniles for Nord Stream 2 compensation measures are being grown at FGBU Glavrybvod facilities in the Leningrad region. The quality and average weight are determined and agreed by the Federal Fishery Agency. Nord Stream 2 AG performs the releases of fish juveniles in a partnership with the company Fertoing Ltd. The programme of compensatory measures for 2018 provides for the release of a total of 170 000 juveniles of the two fish species into the Luga and Neva river waters at least twice in May. The compensatory release of fish juveniles as part of the Nord Stream 2 project will continue in coming years.
