Michels has announced the promotions of Jeff Mueller and Matt Smith. Jeff Mueller has been promoted to Vice President of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations and Matt Smith has been promoted to General Manager of Contracts and Business Administration for HDD operations. After guiding the industry-leading team for two decades, Tim McGuire will transition to a senior advisor role for Michels trenchless technology groups.

Like Tim, Jeff is a respected veteran in the HDD industry and has worked for 31 years at Michels. Jeff started as a skilled labourer and rose through the ranks to drilling survey technician, field operations superintendent and operations manager, a role he took on in 2003.

Jeff has been intrinsically involved in all facets of Michels’ HDD operations, from equipment development and jobsite coordination to bid estimating and employee training. Under his guidance, Michels has completed some of the longest, most challenging record-setting HDD projects in North America.

“I can think of no one more capable than Jeff to take the reins of our relentless pursuit of operational and safety success in trenchless construction,” said Pat Michels, President and CEO. “He is a proven leader who will guide our teams to achieve great accomplishments in the years to come.”

Matt has 15 years of construction experience, including 11 at Michels. He is a heralded practitioner of trenchless construction disciplines, including HDD, Direct Pipe and Tunneling. In 2018, Matt received the prestigious Ralston Young Trenchless Achievement Award, for demonstrating excellence making valuable contributions to the trenchless technology industry. He is one of the most experienced Direct Pipe leaders in North America.

“The culmination of this succession plan positions us for a future filled with advancements in HDD,” Pat Michels said. “Jeff and Matt have been mentored by the industry’s best. Now is their opportunity to advance our capabilities and to develop the next generation of trenchless trailblazers.”
