Pertamina has undertaken a number of spill action programmes of oil spills in Balikpapan Bay. As the timeline previously submitted by Pertamina to the Regional Government and the People’s Representative Assembly (DPR) states, the prevention programmes are carried out in six areas: Jetty area, Semayang to Balikpapan Plaza, Kampung water to Kampung Baru Ulu, Penajam, Teluk Balipapan and Kariangau.

Communications and CSR Manager Yudy Nugraha stated that, as of Sunday 8 April, control in the Jetty area had been largely completed, but there remains patrols and residual oil being collected, as well as thin oil film countermeasures.

In the Semayang-Balikpapan Plaza area, oil spillage in the waters and on the coast, has been tackled and is now visually clean. The next step to be undertaken is the identification of areas of rocks, walls, and other materials that have been in contact with contaminants.

On the waters of Kampung up to Kampung Baru Ulu, there are still films that can come from trapped oil and contact with domestic waste under housing settlements.

In Penajam, the water has been clean since Friday 6 April and continues to be patrolled to monitor the condition of the area. Similarly, the Balikpapan Bay area has been clean since Friday 6 April, and patrol boats continue to monitor the area four times a day. In the Kariangau area, coastal clearance continues to be carried out by lowering the ship patrol for sweeping.

Visually the territorial waters of Balikpapan are clean, but cleaning the remnants of oil film layer still needs to be undertaken. Similarly, where there are settlements, it is necessary to handle special tools that stick to the plants and also the waters under the settlements. Until today, Pertamina is still deploying three patrol boats in zones 1, 2 and 3 and a fleet of boats – consisting of 7 units of tugboat, 3 units of barge and 4 units of aluminium boat.

Pertamina is also still waiting upon the investigation team’s results regarding the burden of the oil spill in Balikpapan Bay. Meanwhile, various measures for the citizens are carried out as part of Pertamina's Corporate Social Responsibility programme, including supporting community work activities. Today work is carried out with 300 people in Kampung Baru Dua Ulu. Previously, similar activities conducted in Kampung Atas Air involved 800 people.
