World Pipelines,
As of this week, 50% of the offshore section for the TurkStream offshore gas pipeline has been installed. Over 930 km of pipeline has been laid in total on the seabed of the Black Sea, divided over two strings.
Pioneering Spirit, the vessel responsible for the deepwater sections of the pipeline, passed kilometer point 706 on 6 March for the first line. For the second line, 224 km were installed in 2017.
Construction of the offshore section started on 7 May 2017 by Alseas’ vessel Audacia. On 23 June 2017, Pioneering Spirit took over to install the deepwater section. Pioneering Spirit has been working on the project continuously since then.
The TurkStream offshore gas pipeline will consist of two parallel gas pipelines stretching for 930 km across the Black Sea, each with a diameter of 81 cm and an annual throughput capacity of 15.75 billion m3. TurkStream will be the first pipeline of its size to be installed at a water depth of up to 2200 m. One of the pipelines will cater for the Turkish market, while the other will stretch to the Turkish-European border to ensure reliable deliveries of Russian gas to south and southeast Europe.
In line with the schedule, first gas is expected to flow through TurkStream by the end of 2019. The TurkStream offshore pipeline is constructed by South Stream Transport B.V., a 100% subsidiary of Gazprom.
