Segment of Albanian road infrastructure rehabilitation completed by TAP

At the end of 2016, Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG completed the first phase of road infrastructure rehabilitation in Albania, comprising the upgrade of approximately 58 km of access roads, construction of two new bridges and refurbishment of 40 bridges. Works lasted a year and a half and were conducted by the joint venture formed by Gener 2 Sh.p.K and Sicilsaldo S.p.A.
The upgraded road infrastructure will facilitate the transport of line pipes and equipment necessary for the pipeline construction activities. It also assists the development of neighbouring local communities and businesses in the Korça, Berati and Fier regions. Approximately 200 000 people benefit from the improved infrastructure.
Works were designed to have minimum impact on the environment and the communities along the pipeline route. Over 600 workers were employed in the process, over 99% Albanian.
Karl Roberts, TAP Project Manager for Albania, said: “I want to congratulate all those who contributed to this success. Despite a complex and challenging geography, with elevations of up to 1800 m, works were completed on time, on budget and, above all, to the highest safety standards.”
“Additionally, we’re proud to highlight few records for Albania. This is the first time bridges have been strengthened without interrupting road traffic, the first time quarries and natural material disposal sites have been reinstated to exacting environmental standards, and such care has been taken over preserving, monitoring and rescuing cultural heritage artefacts,” Roberts added.
A second phase of road upgrades, consisting of approximately 120 km roads, will be constructed by TAP’s Engineering, Procurement and Construction Pipeline contractor Spiecapag.
