Chairman of FERC is sworn in

US President Donald Trump's choice to lead the federal agency that oversees the nation's power grid and natural gas pipelines was sworn in to office yesterday.
Energy lawyer Kevin McIntyre was confirmed last month as chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). His installation yesterday brings the commission to a full five members, for the first time since October 2015.
The commission was without a quorum for much of the year and unable to make decisions on interstate pipelines and other projects worth billions of dollars.
As an independent commission, FERC has largely avoided pressure from the White House and Congress in recent years but FERC is now facing unprecedented pressure from the Trump Administration. McIntyre’s leadership will be a test of the extent to which he can withstand pressure from the White House.
McIntyre, a former Jones Day energy lawyer has extensive experience with power market law, but his feelings on pressing issues such as pipeline approvals are unclear.
