AIS Survivex to raise awareness of training onboard assets

Chris Redgrave, 44, will take up the role of Business Development Manager responsible for AIS Survivex’s wide ranging onboard training and competency portfolio in both the UK and internationally.

Onboard training involves teaching people in their own offshore working environment, using the exact operating equipment, company procedures and environment they are familiar with. This type of training is known to be highly effective, as well as convenient and cost-effective. AIS Survivex is a recognised expert in this arena having delivered training onboard more than 150 assets across all seven continents world-wide over the last decade.

Aberdeen-born Chris is well suited to the role. He has worked in oil and gas his entire 18-year career. Initially starting out as a roustabout in the North Sea, Chris worked onboard oil rigs for two years before moving into a business development role with downhole casing experts, Apex Tubulars. A University of Glasgow graduate in languages, Chris quickly put this expertise to good use in his next two career moves, setting up a new South American office for Petroleum Pipe Company and then relocating to East Africa with Japanese trading firm, Marubeni-Itochu Steel Oceania. During this period, Chris was responsible for securing several high profile multi-million-pound contracts.

Chris returned to Aberdeen in 2017 enjoying business development roles with Oceaneering, Tenaris and Trident Marine Systems before taking up the position with AIS Survivex. His first priority will be getting to grips with AIS Survivex’s extensive product range, which includes more than 500 training and competency courses approved by the world’s leading accreditation and standard setting bodies. As well as the training portfolio, Chris will be promoting technologies such as Drilling Systems’ On-The-Rig (OTR) Drilling Simulator – a mobile simulator which allows highly realistic drilling and well control training to take place on the rig itself.

Chris said: “Joining AIS Survivex really excites me. The company has a unique and highly innovative approach to business, which explains why it has grown so phenomenally to become the UK’s largest training provider and second biggest worldwide. My oil and gas experience, particularly working in the field, has given me unrivalled insight into what oil and gas companies need – a highly competent workforce with a strong health and safety culture.

“The AIS Survivex onboard offer perfectly fits this requirement. When onboard in their own working environment, people tend to be very engaged with the training and assessment process, and are extremely focussed. Being comfortable in their surroundings and knowing the systems and procedures inside-out means they can concentrate much more closely on the instruction. People are also learning alongside colleagues, which helps with communication and the building of strong teams. The benefits to the client are endless. In addition to impressive cost reductions, our multi skilled instructors can work around rig operations, utilising downtime to train and realising incredible time efficiencies too. I’m really looking forward to talking to AIS Survivex clients and others about the benefits of onboard training and finding out how we can help them now and into the future.”

Chris Bews, Head of Sales at AIS Survivex, said: “We are delighted to welcome Chris to AIS Survivex and to our expanding business development team. He has a fantastic track record of building strong client relationships and will be a great ambassador for our onboard training offer.”
