During a meeting on 15 June, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, have agreed to increase their energy co-operation, stating that speeding up construction on the EastMed pipeline is on the cards.

The €6 billion, 2000 km underwater pipeline project is set to transport eastern Mediterranean natural gas reserves to Europe.
Tsipras reportedly stated: “The discovery of significant reserves of natural gas in Cyprus and Israel, Greece’s strategy to become an energy hub in the region, and the possible existence of new reserves in the exclusive economic zones of Cyprus, Israel but also Greece offer extremely interesting prospects for this co-operation.”
There have been preliminary studies of the proposed pipeline, which are said to look promising.
