On 15 November, residents of the Ankapura village (India) reported a gas leak from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (HPCL) Mangalore-Hassan-Mysore-Sollur LPG pipeline.

The residents discovered the leak at approximately 9:30 pm, before informing the Hassan fire station and the Goruru police.

Since reporting the leak, the police have advised residents to evacuate to safer areas. Fire tenders have been hosing water at the leak, in order to reduce the vapours being emitted. Sand sacks have also been placed at the site as a means of containing the leak.

An assistant fire station officer stated: “We have been spraying water to reduce the vapours. The gas has been leaking because of a small hole in the pipeline. The closest valve has been closed. However, we have to be cautious until the gas in the pipeline is put out. The efforts may continue till late in the night.”

The pipeline is currently under construction, and is set to transport gas across 410 km (255 miles).

At present, the police are camping at the village to monitor the leak until it’s contained.
