Trans Mountain signs Community Benefit Agreement with Parkland County

“This Agreement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to offset the construction impacts of the Expansion Project and provide local benefits to communities. We’re proud to be involved in a project that will provide new recreation opportunities and serve as an important community hub for the residents of Parkland County,” says Lizette Parsons Bell, Director of Stakeholder Engagement & Communications for Trans Mountain.

Council reviewed the terms of the initial Agreement, signed in 2015, and determined that this project reflects the current needs of the County.

“We’re excited for the new the Entwistle Community Hub to open this summer and are grateful that Trans Mountain could help contribute to this important community project that will help attract and retain residents in the area for years to come,” says Parkland County Mayor Rod Shaigec. “The funding will compensate for any disruptions during construction of the Expansion Project. We look forward to working collaboratively with Trans Mountain as activities progress in the area.”

Trans Mountain values the relationships it has built with communities along the pipeline corridor that span over its 65-year history. The company has signed Community Benefit Agreements along 95% of the pipeline route, which help with initiatives from education and training opportunities, to investing in infrastructure and park and trail improvement projects. The funds help to compensate for public inconvenience and temporary disruption caused in the route communities during construction.

Parkland County is part of Trans Mountain’s Yellowhead construction area that begins west of Edmonton and includes about 285 km of pipeline and four pump stations. Trans Mountain began construction at two of its pump stations in this area in October 2019, and pipeline construction began in December 2019. At peak construction, approximately 800 people are expected to be working in the region by the end of 2020.
