Inauguration of the Val de Saône programme

On Friday 12 October, the Val de Saône programme was inaugurated in Palleau (Saône-et-Loire) in the presence of Mr. Jean-Paul Emorine, Senator of Saône-et-Loire, Mr. Olivier Ciavaldini, Mayor of Palleau, Mr. Thierry Trouvé, Managing Director of GRTgaz, as well as representatives of the European Commission and the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE). This programme marks the culmination of a decade of major infrastructure projects, more than €6 billion invested by GRTgaz to promote the opening of the market and strengthen security of supply in France.

- Investment of €700 million (European Union funding – €60 million for the purchase of tubes).

- + 250 GW/d of capacity between North and South (equivalent to 10 nuclear units).
- 188 km of buried pipelines between Etrez (Ain) and Voisines (Haute-Marne).
- 3 crossed regions (Grand Est, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes).
- 4 departments (Haute-Marne, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire and Ain) and 65 municipalities.
- 6 simultaneous installation lots requiring up to 2000 technicians and experts in the field.
- 68 bar – maximum operating pressure.
- DN 1200 - diameter of the tubes in mm.
- 9 sectioning stations.
- 11 000 tubes for a total weight of nearly 100 000 t.
- 3 modernised interconnection stations in Etrez (Ain), Palleau (Saône-et-Loire) and Voisines (Haute-Marne). Reinforcement of the compression of the Etrez station by adding a third compressor (9 MW).
The commissioning of the infrastructure of the Val de Saône programme is an essential link to improve the fluidity of transit between markets in the North and South of Europe and beyond the security of supply at European level. France now has all the assets to play a key role in the functioning of gas Europe.
The works of the Val de Saône programme were carried out in compliance with costs, deadlines, regulatory and safety requirements. Associated with the commissioning of works on the Teréga network (transmission system operator in the South-West) and some adaptations on the GRTgaz network in the South of France, this development offers the necessary transport capacities the creation of a single market area gas in France, effective from 1 November 2018. The new infrastructure will contribute to facilitate access to the most competitive sources of gas, including gas suppliers, consumers and industrialists, and to increase the attractiveness of the wholesale gas market in France.
