API and NABTU statement on Atlantic Coast Pipeline

American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers and North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) President Sean McGarvey issued the following statement after energy companies cancelled construction of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline after years of unnecessary delays.
“The cancellation of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline sets America back by denying working families and businesses access to affordable and cleaner US natural gas and halting thousands of middle-class sustaining jobs.
“Like too many shovel-ready projects before it, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline faced legal and permitting challenges waged without merit by activists, and these challenges ultimately cost Americans along its route the environmental, employment, and economic benefits that modern pipeline projects bring.”
API represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 600 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation’s energy. The industry supports 10.9 million US jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of millions of Americans. API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organisation. In its first 100 years, API has developed more than 700 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
