Denholm Pipetech (Pipetech), a Denholm Environmental subsidiary, is celebrating a summer of activity that included delivering some of its best-known remediation services and a breakthrough in an upcoming wellbore cleaning solution.

The Downhole Scale Remediation (DSR) tool, developed in collaboration with the Net Zero Technology Centre’s (NZTC) emissions reduction programme, aims to redefine wellbore cleaning solutions and advance sustainable practices. Over springtime, Pipetech and the NZTC held the first well trial for the DSR at NZTC's Technology Testing Hub in Aberdeen. The deployment was undertaken to demonstrate the DSR's capabilities in a well environment and to gather operational data to establish a technical baseline for future tool refinement, deployment planning, and commercial application.
Although originally designed for deployment on coiled tubing, the trial was on 9-5/8 in. casing-size drill pipe to showcase its additional potential and flexibility for diverse operational requirements. The trial featured successful completion of five test segments to assess cleaning coverage and operating behaviour, with pre- and post-job camera comparisons indicating evidence of cleaning effectiveness, including visible cleaning lines on the casing and particles observed downhole.
Overall, the trial achieved its primary objective of demonstrating the DSR in a wellsite environment and generating first-use operational data, while showing its potential to be carried out on coiled tubing to maximise cleaning efficiency and test flexibility.
While the DSR continued its development journey, several of Pipetech's established solutions have been utilised over the last six months. Supporting critical energy infrastructure in the UK, Pipetech has delivered its Aqua Milling® technology and on-site personnel to remove waxes, hard scales, corrosion, and other foulants that naturally occur within lines responsible for transporting both oil and gas from the North Sea to processing terminals in England.
Used as an alternative to traditional jetting systems, Aqua Milling has been known to clean systems back to bare metal, navigate complex bends, and clean a greater distance from a single-entry point. These functions were effectively proven on Pipetech's recent projects, working with clients including multinational independent hydrocarbon producers and exploration and production operators.
Leonard Hamill, Operations Director at Pipetech, is using recent success to fuel a strong end to the year: "The last six months have been the embodiment of Pipetech's ethos: blending the delivery of established solutions with our desire to innovate, reinvent industry standards, and find growth opportunities. Whether it's our Aqua Milling technology or the exciting development of our DSR tool, it's about tackling complex process remediation to maximise efficiency and production.
When applying our market-ready solutions, we are always proud of the results they have achieved and the client feedback we receive - the work we've completed on key energy terminals and refineries in England in the last 18 months has kept that up. Meanwhile, the DSR continues to make progress on its journey to market launch, even demonstrating capabilities for new applications and well environments beyond what we initially thought.
The mix of both, and investment from Denholm Environmental, is placing us in an incredible position to end the year on a high, with further growth announcements coming soon."
