Geological tests on gas pipeline in Delimara

Geological tests and sampling work is currently underway, according to Minister without portfolio, Konrad Mizzi. This process forms part of a second detailed study co-financed by the European Union on the seabed route, the basic design and the necessary documentation.

In a statement issued on 4 October, the minister highlighted that this process is part of a second detailed study that focuses on the seabed route, the basic design and the documentation that is necessary to be able to submit the necessary environmental permits for the pipeline.

The European Union has declared the pipeline project as a ‘common interest project’ for the EU and Malta. As a result, the EU has partially funded the project.

According to a 2015 study, the best route for the pipeline would be from Gela (Sicily) to Marsascala. The pipeline would be 22 in. dia. and would stretch 155 km. Once the pipeline is ready, Malta will no longer need its floating storage unit.

Mizzi has also been reported to have stated that the government is working for the pipeline to be finished in the shortest time possible.
