Applus RTD to showcase pipeline inspection tool at IPC

World Pipelines,

Applus RTD will showcase its RTD DTI Trekscan pipeline inspection tool at the International Pipeline Conference (IPC) in Calgary.

The RTD DTI Trekscan product is being led by Applus RTD’s global product line manager, Mark Slaughter.

Free-floating

It is the first free-floating inspection tool designed to traverse back-to-back one-dimensional (1D) bends, with an optimum speed of 1 m/s (2.2 mph). It can run in pipelines previously considered to be ‘unpiggable’.

Standard tool configuration has a maximum battery life of up to 16 km (10 miles) at 1.25 m/s (2.75 mph) and for data storage the maximum standard tool configuration allows for 64 km of data based on a 2.5 mm axial sampling.

The bi-directional tool measures the return echoes of a transmitted ultrasound beam. The amount of time it takes to receive an echo provides highly accurate information on the remaining wall and enables detection and sizing of metal loss anomalies.

Comments

Martin Fingerhut, President of Kiefner, commented: “The development of the RTD DTI tool has many benefits for our clients, not least is its ability to measure metal loss anomalies in pipeline that would have previously been considered unpiggable. It also provides high levels of detection for characterisation capabilities - a feature not previously available without compromising efficiency.

“We will be demonstrating our ultra high resolution solution for unpiggable pipelines for the first time over the next few days at the IPC in Calgary. All of our technology developments are based on improving the quality of information but also engineering out the operating risks. We would encourage visitors to come to the Applus RTD mobile technology center to see this latest breakthrough in action.”

The standard configuration of RTD DTI Trekscan comes in 6” and 8” sizes. It weighs 15 kg (33 lbs) and its maximum operating temperature is 40C (104F).
