Gail (India) seeks expansion

World Pipelines,

In response to increasing domestic demand for natural gas, Gail (India) Ltd. has commissioned capacities in liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants. Company Chairman and Managing Director, B.C. Tripathi, spoke of an agreement with overseas company Petronet LNG Ltd. for the reservation of 2.5 million tpy in the expanding Dahej LNG terminal, whose capacity will rise from 10 - 15 million tonnes.

In addition, Gail has booked capacities at the Dabhol LNG plant at Ratnagiri, Maharashtra that will see it the commercial operator for 25 years. The plant will supply southern and western India.

In a bid to import LNG, Gail has plans to invest in the shipping of LNG into the country. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shipping of Corporation India Ltd. (SCI). This understanding will see Gail and SCI oversee the transportation of 5.8 million tpy of LNG from US terminals, Sabine Pass and Cove Point.

Tripathi outlined that upstream, midstream and downstream represent the crucial areas for the development of Gail. Gail will build new re-gasification capacity and expand its pipeline system and will also place emphasis on trading to benefit from both national and international markets.
