Decision time for Northern Gateway, Line 3 and Trans Mountain

This week, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is rumoured to announce the governments decision on Enbridge Inc.’s Northern Gateway and Line 3 pipelines, as well as Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion project.
Environmentalist, Ben West, explained: “There may be a decision on both Enbridge Line 3, Northern Gateway, as well as Kinder Morgan being announced in Alberta [on 29 November]. We also heard rumours there was discussion of this at cabinet a week ago.”
It has been noted that Trudeau and ministers of the federal cabinet came to the decision on Friday 25 November. However, as Trudeau was attending the la Francophonie summit last week, the decision was not made public. He has since returned.
Though no verdict has been stated yet, many assume at least one of the projects in question will be approved.
John Manley, President and CEO of the Business Council of Canada, stated: “I would be very surprised if there were no pipelines emerging from this … Acquiescence to a price on carbon really is looked at as one side of a grand bargain that would see pipelines built in return.”
Whilst it is expected that one (or, potentially, all) of the pipelines will be given a green light, many environmentalists, citizens and even government officials oppose all three projects.
West argued that the government is not listening to the concerns of British Columbians, and instead prioritising Alberta: “If I was the government, I probably wouldn’t want to make that announcement in British Columbia, you’d think out of respect for people and their concerns. But to me, it’s a signal that they are listening more to the desires of the people in Alberta than in British Columbia.”
Similarly, Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Robertson, stated he will not support either of the pipeline projects, whether they receive approval or not.
“The city of Vancouver has been very clear, we don’t accept the pipeline proposal with any conditions. The process to review it by the National Energy Board was flawed and biased. They ignored science – they shut out voices of people here on the West Coast. There’s no First Nations or local community support here.”
Yet, despite his opposition, Robertson remains optimistic that the government will consider the noted concerns prior to announcing the decision on the three pipelines.
