Mexico announces pipeline plans: June 2015

Mexico's government has announced plans for nearly US$10 billion in electricity and natural gas projects that include two pipelines linked to the US.
The plans will add 2300 km to Mexico's gas pipeline system, Energy Minister Pedro Joaquin Coldwell said yesterday.
An 800 km subsea pipeline costing US$3.1 billion will connect Texas to the port of Tuxpan in the state of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. It would become operational in 2018.
Another 250 km, US$1.5 billion onshore pipeline will be built from Brownsville, Texas, and will link up with the subsea project.
Mexico has passed a sweeping energy reform that has opened the country's oil, gas and electricity sectors to foreign investments for the first time in decades.
Officials hope that facilitating the importation of inexpensive natural gas will help lower Mexico's electricity rates.
Other projects include power plants, electricity distribution, transmission lines and electrical substations.
