CEPA launches new interactive pipelines map

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) has launched a new interactive digital map, giving Canadians easy access to detailed information about transmission pipelines.

CEPA’s About Pipelines Map, which operates on the Google maps platform, lets visitors enter an address, postal code, city or province to find the exact location of pipelines and facilities in their area and access lots of information that hasn’t been previously available. The map also gives users information on the age of pipelines, which company operates them, what oil and gas products they transport and who regulates them.

A second phase of the map due to be added in December will include an additional layer of information detailing pipeline incidents.

“We recognised the need to develop a user friendly tool that people can use to see exactly where transmission pipeline infrastructure is located,” says Brenda Kenny, President and CEO, CEPA. “As part of our About Pipelines website, it’s a great resource for people to get better informed about this critical infrastructure that impacts all of our lives.”

“CEPA member companies have built an outstanding transmission pipeline system to transport energy to consumers in the safest and most environmentally sound way. Our members have 40 233 km of liquid pipelines and 77 015 km of natural gas pipelines. CEPA’s About Pipelines Map is a great way for people to find out more about them,” says Kenny. “It’s just one example of how we’re working to ensure we’re responsive to the concerns of Canadians by providing information about pipelines that is credible, objective and totally transparent.”

The About Pipelines Map does not include other types of pipelines, such as gathering, feeder and distribution lines.

CEPA represents Canada’s transmission pipeline companies who operate about 117 000 km of pipeline in Canada. These “energy highways” moved approximately 1.2 billion bbls of liquid petroleum products and 5.3 trillion ft³ of natural gas last year. CEPA members transport 97% of Canada’s daily natural gas and onshore crude oil from producing regions to markets throughout North America.
