Irving Oil Chairman comments on Energy East pipeline

The chairman of Irving oil plugged Energy East at the opening ceremony. He confidently predicts that the pipeline that is currently being examined by federal regulators "will happen.” He does, however, also believe that the process is taking too long.

An National Energy Board (NEB) panel that is reviewing the proposal was recused last month after it was revealed that two of the three panellists met with the former Premier of Quebec, Jean Charest.

Arthur Irving stated that Alberta's struggling economy needs the pipeline to sell its fossil fuels. He continues to remain eager to form a partnership with TransCanada to build a deepwater terminal in the Bay of Fundy, where tankers would be able to ship the crude across the world.

Irving commented: "That will happen but it's taking a little longer than it should. But it will happen because it is the right thing to do for Canada. They can't get along without it. Alberta needs it, the East Coast needs it and the crude has to be sold and transported."

If approved, the 4600 km TransCanada pipeline would carry 1.1 million bpd of crude oil from Alberta to New Brunswick. However, the pipeline project has faced stiff opposition and great criticism from some of the First Nation groups, along with environmentalists.
