Egypt resumes gas supply to Israel
The gas supply to Israel from Egypt has only just been resumed after saboteurs severed the pipeline in an explosion on 5 February. The pipeline repairs have been delayed several times due to pipe leaks and ongoing security issues in the Sinai Peninsula after the fall of Mubarak’s regime.
Egypt has been supplying Israel with 40% of its natural gas needs since May 2008, which is used to generate 20% of Israel’s electricity needs. As a result of the severed pipeline Israel has been forced to source its gas from the Yam Tatis reservoir in the meantime, but this overuse of the reservoir is likely to deplete it by as early as 2012, should this happen, Israel intends to bring the Tamar reservoir online.
The new Egyptian regime has made no secret of its desire to renegotiate the terms of the supply agreement that Egypt has with Israel and the fact that the quantity of gas supplied will be much reduced.
