Canada’s emergency management transparency: June 2015

World Pipelines,

The National Energy Board (NEB) reminds Canadians that the public consultation on the transparency of emergency management information will close on 25 June 2015.

On 27 April, the public consultation process was launched by the NEB Chair, Peter Watson, in order to gather input into the type and the level of detail Canadians feel is necessary and appropriate to include in pipeline company emergency management information.

Currently, all NEB-regulated pipeline companies are required to develop and maintain an emergency management programme in order to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, and manage public safety and environmental protection in the event of an emergency. The NEB assesses company emergency management programs through reviews, emergency response exercises, company compliance meetings, and emergency management system audits.

The NEB is encouraging all stakeholders to participate in the emergency management public consultation. Upon reaching its conclusion, the NEB will respond in a meaningful and measured way that takes into account public input and what is in the public interest.
