Malin React appoints Business Unit Manager

With over 25 years’ experience in engineering, subsea installation, construction and project management, Graham has previously held various roles in the oil and gas industries.

Starting his career as an apprentice welder, his CV includes positions with Subsea 7, DOF Subsea UK, Bibby Offshore, Helix Energy Solutions and GAP Subsea Ltd – servicing many clients in the oil and gas industry with engineering expertise and personnel.

He has advanced knowledge of subsea installation engineering, team management, tendering, cost control, mechanical engineering, isolation philosophy, pipelines precommissioning and steelwork fabrication, with a track-record of delivering major capital engineering, construction and subsea inspection as well as repair and maintenance (IRM) projects across the world.

With this background, he has been appointed to oversee the growth of Malin React, one of seven subsidiary brands which make up Malin Marine Limited, formally Malin Marine Consultants Aberdeen – a company with a history spanning 11 years. It specialises in complete solutions for rapid installation of offshore marine equipment onto vessels (mobilisations), with a focus on the defence, renewables and offshore oil and gas sectors.

Graham and his team will be overseeing the delivery of turnkey mobilisation projects including vessel assessment, sea fastening design, grillage production, hot work installations aligned with class requirements in addition to the full equipment load out and system setting to work – with a focus on providing a complete solution at short notice.

Malin React will contract on a fixed price with penalties as required tied to vessel delivery, taking on and managing customers’ operations and commercial risks. With capabilities to undertake 3D surveys to improve the fidelity of grillage works, Malin React will be able to reduce time while also cutting cost for clients.

Since coming into post, one of Graham’s first projects was the completion of a complex vessel mobilisation for the NATO Submarine Rescue System (NSRS) during the Golden Arrow offshore exercise, working in partnership with JFD.

A 25 strong Malin React team, was responsible for the overall build and integration of the NSRS onto a UK Naval Service multi-purpose auxiliary ship docked at George V Dock, Glasgow, installing all of the sea fastenings to ensure the high-value safety equipment was transported securely while also conducting the demobilisation upon return from sea.

18 welders, two mobilisation experts, four platers and an NDT Technician completed the installation of a portable A-frame, a hyperbaric chamber system, the RIB Davit and deck winch systems – in line with Lloyd’s Register of Shipping requirements.

Graham Penman said: “With the capacity to undertake complex projects at extremely short notice, Malin React’s expert team has extensive experience in the defence, renewables and offshore oil and gas industries – key sectors for the business’s overall strategic development. Taking pride in attention to detail, our role begins with initial vessel option assessment but extends to final equipment load test and deployment – a complete service which is continually evolving.

“Working alongside JFD in the completion of this exercise deployment is a prime example of the Malin React offering where time is critical and there is a requirement for turnkey mobilisation services.”

Graham Tait, Managing Director at Malin Marine Limited said: “Malin React is born from demand within the industry but bolstered by the knowledge and reputation of Malin Marine Consultants – so we’re delighted to have Graham as its Business Unit Manager. His unrivalled skillsets across many different sectors combined with a hugely impressive track record in delivering vessel mobilisations puts the operation in extremely good hands as it undertakes an ambitious trajectory of growth.”
