China and Tajikistan begin construction of Line D

China and Tajikistan have begun construction work on Line D, the longest stretch of the China-Central Asia Gas Pipeline. The pipeline will run from Turkmenistan, via Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, to China and is expected to deliver some 30 billion m³/y of natural gas. 410 km of the 1000 km Line D pipeline will run through Tajikistan, creating more than 3000 jobs.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon attended the construction commencement ceremony in Tajikistan on 13 September 2014. Speaking at the ceremony, President Xi Jinping noted that, “The China-Central Asia gas pipeline project, which involves multiple participants, will significantly boost the regional economic development.” Furthermore, the project will form part of a new era of cooperation between Beijing and Central Asia. “We should carry on the ancient Silk Road spirit, pass on our friendship, deepen cooperation and jointly build a brighter future for the relations of our two nations,” said Xi. Construction work is due for completion in 2016.
