Strobel Energy Group has developed an innovative process unit for use in the energy sector to measure the volumes of liquid products that are transferred to/from assets on their way to market.

Strobel develops LACT units for energy industry

The Lease Automatic Custody Transfer (LACT) unit measures the net volume and quality of liquid hydrocarbons with a throughput capacity up to approximately 12 000 bpd, providing for the automatic measurement, sampling and transfer of oil from a lease location into a truck terminal, storage facility or pipeline.

The units that Strobel has developed are automated and provide real time communication to a web-based application that allows the owner to manage the process much more effectively than the manual systems of the past. The increased functionality and tighter tolerance pays for itself by eliminating inaccuracies (shorts) and allowing reconciliation and billing in real time. Strobel, a leader in the midstream energy infrastructure engineering and construction industry, developed these units in collaboration with its industry partner Automation Electronics, Inc. out of Casper, Wyoming.

The automated LACT units have been installed and operational at facilities in the Permian Basin with plans to install at multiple basins across the US. Benefits and capabilities of the units are as follows:

  • Remote access volumetric product movements.
  • Minimise product volume discrepancies.
  • Real time billing.
  • Surveillance and monitoring of drivers and carriers.
  • Provided with meter and/or sample ports.
  • Designed/built per API Specification 11N.

Strobel will provide the units for purchase or lease and can provide maintenance and operations.
