Iran’s gas exports to Iraq will commence in 2014
According to Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi, operations to build a gas pipeline from Iran to Iraq will be completed in 2014.
Qasemi, who met his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Kareem Al-Luaibi in Baghdad earlier this week, said the agreement on Iranian gas supplies to Iraq has “reached the final stage of signing.” He added, “The launch of gas exports will proceed by stages. First, gas will start to be supplied to Baghdad and then, within another three months, to Basra.”
According to Iran’s Deputy Minister of Oil Hamidreza Araqi, Iran plans to export 25 million m3/day to Basra, Iraq. Iran will also export 4 million m3/day of gas to Baghdad’s power plants in the first phase, before increasing to 25 million in the second phase.
Alireza Gharibi, Managing Director of Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company said, “Due to the first Iran-Iraq pipeline, Tehran will have the capacity to export 8 -10 million m3/day of gas to Iran. Ghabi added, “Iran will construct two pipelines to export gas to the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Basra...Construction of the second pipeline will be started as soon as the contract is signed.” Ghabi added that Iran’s sixth cross-country gas pipeline will feed the two pipelines.
