Robert Gordon University (RGU) has joined forces with global consulting and engineering company, Wood, to tackle key challenges facing the transitioning energy sector through a mix of research, skills development, academic/industry discourse and new initiatives.
The two organisations, both based in Aberdeen, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will see them look at ways of addressing these challenges and crafting solutions that will benefit the wider industry and Higher Education.
The organisations co-created and co-delivered their first event through a Student Innovation Challenge, where students developed innovative ideas and proposals for attracting and retaining an inclusive and diverse workforce for the future. The initiative involved Wood Executives, with the inaugural Wood RGU Innovation Challenge trophy awarded to the team of students who delivered the most impactful proposal.
Donella Beaton, Associate Vice Principal for Business and Economic Development at RGU, commented: “We are delighted to announce the RGU-Wood Partnership, the result of many in-depth discussions, recognising the alignment of vision and approach of our two organisations.
“The MOU is an important milestone, but even more important is the journey that has already commenced as illustrated through the Student Innovation Challenge focused on diversity and inclusion and other developing initiatives.”
Craig Shanaghey, Wood’s President for Operations across Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said: “This MOU represents the beginning of a pivotal partnership that enables both Wood and RGU to leverage the strength and knowledge of the other organisation, collaborating to develop bold ideas and new ways of working to solve the challenges faced by both the energy industry and higher education.”
“I was really impressed by the calibre of solutions delivered by the students at the first Innovation Challenge, it left me inspired and excited as we focus on continuing to create a great working environment, where everyone can be themselves and achieve their full potential. I look forward to working with RGU to build upon the success of our first event through future projects and challenges.”
