NGTL pipeline approved by federal government

On Monday 31 October, the Canadian government approved the CAN$1.3 billion NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd (NGTL) natural gas gathering pipeline. However, 36 binding conditions came with the approval, set by the National Energy Board (NEB).
The conditions cover the protection and restoration of the caribou habitat, as the pipeline is set to run through the woodlands inhabited by the animals; developing an emergency response plan in the event of an unlikely leak; attaining authorisation under the Fisheries Act and to guarantee water sources and fish populations won’t be affected by crossings; engaging with indigenous communities throughout the project; and to reduce the disturbance of vegetation, wetlands and wildlife throughout the entirety of the project.
Jim Carr, Canada‘s Minister of Natural Resources, stated: “The twin imperatives of economic prosperity and environmental protection guided us in our decision-making, and I am confident the right decision was made in the interest of Canadians and that this project supports the principles of sustainable development.”
The 14 600 mile NGTL pipeline will produce approximately 3000 jobs and support Canada’s economic growth. The project is expected to be completed by 2Q18.
