Presserv Ltd is launching a new training facility, which will train 150 graduates to apply a range of protective coatings to pipework and structural steel both on and offshore by the end of 2018.

The new courses, delivered by training and operations manager Brian Reid, will teach contractors and operators the correct way to apply STOPAQ surface coatings, building upon Presserv’s reputation as a global leader in the provision of preservation, surface preparation and specialist coatings.

Brian, who joined Presserv in May, is recognised as a prominent authority on protective coatings, and is a 30 year veteran of the fabric maintenance industry. His expertise both on- and offshore will prove invaluable for those learning in Presserv’s new training facility which is located at its Aberdeen base, allowing trainees to learn from an established expert in the field.

Brian says, “When applying STOPAQ surface coating solutions, there is minimal surface preparation required meaning a reduced requirement for abrasive blasting. Unlike other corrosion-preventive coatings, STOPAQ is unbreakable, does not age, is environmentally friendly and cannot disbond from the surface to which it is applied.

“Because of this, the provision of STOPAQ coatings has become one of Presserv’s most popular services, and increasingly we are asked to provide training and support to our clients’ own staff in the application and maintenance of these products.

“We now offer a comprehensive range of certified training programmes for the application of STOPAQ to ensure that teams both on and offshore have the competency to apply the products in a wide range of environments for a multitude of uses.

“Our training covers STOPAQ application across a wide variety of surfaces and conditions, including 2 – 48 in. steel pipework in wet and dry environments, applications to minimally-prepared structural steel, and specialised applications like trunnion remediation.”

Presserv’s training is offered at three distinct levels – technician-level certified application, advanced application, and inspection and supervision certification – in the company’s customised training room and workshops.

Brian continues, “Each training session comprises a classroom-based presentation before a practical, hands-on learning experience with materials specific to the pipes or steel surfaces trainees will be working with. Some higher-level trainees are also required to sit an exam paper.
