Assessment of long seam welding in ERW and flash-welded pipes

This white paper presents Intero's innovation in pipeline inspection: the integration of a circumferential magnetic flux leakage (CMFL) sensor into the Pipe Explorer robotic platform. Targeting long seam welds in 'unpiggable' pipelines, this technology overcomes limitations of traditional inspection methods.

These pipelines, often vulnerable to corrosion and cracks, were previously challenging to inspect due to their complex features and operational constraints.

The Pipe Explorer, equipped with the CMFL sensor, enables precise inspection and identification of anomalies like corrosion and cracks, specifically near long seam welds. This advanced tool uses internal motors for propulsion, offering greater control compared to free-swimming inline tools. It marks a significant improvement in pipeline safety, enabling proactive maintenance and decision-making.

Intero's successful deployment of this technology is demonstrated by over 30 kilometers of inspected pipelines, enhancing safety and surpassing conventional methods. The paper also discusses ongoing advancements and plans to expand the technology's capabilities to a wider range of pipeline sizes.
