Following a sixth month programme launched last year by the ECITB and Offshore Project Management Steering Group (OPMSG), 16 successful candidates from companies includingSubsea7, Wood Group, Petrofac, Aker Solutions, Apache and Maersk have been awarded the APM Registered Project Professional (RPP) designation. This follows the success ofShell, which is already using the RPP programme with its senior project professionals in the sector.

RPP

RPP is an independently assessed and recognised level of project management competence for delivering complex projects. The ECITB and OPMSG set out to raise awareness in the oil and gas industry and take the lead in facilitating a higher ‘minimum’standard to be acknowledged across the sector. This was to address the gap in the industry in recognising the standards at which project practitioners managing complex projects are working to and to address competence and leadership needs within teams.

ECITB comments

Lynsey Benson, ECITB Account Manager for the Offshore Region and member of the OPMSG, said: “Other energy sectors such as nuclear and power generation are recognising and workingtowards a defined standard of competence, through the RPP model. We need to ensure senior oil and gas project practitioners are accredited and can deliver against core nontechnical competencies such as leadership, behaviours, and communication, all of which are vital in delivering complex projects. These 16 exceptional individuals will help the OPMSG in championing this recognition throughout the sector.”

Management standard

RPP is a pan-sector standard for managers who can demonstrate the capabilities of a responsible leader and the ability to manage complex projects and use appropriate tools, processes and techniques. It is about recognising individuals who can achieve success in a complex project, programme and portfolio environment through the management of others.

Comments from 20|20

Local Project Management Specialist, 20|20 Business Insight helped support and mentor the group through to a successful outcome. Tony Marks, Chief Executive of 20|20 Business Insight commented: “20|20 was pleased to work with ECITB and APM to deliver the highly-regarded RPP standard to the offshore sector. The support programme was delivered by 20|20's Dr Munther Mahsoub and the delegate feedback has been excellent, with all carefully selected candidates who completed the program achieving RPP status. ECITB's vision in promoting and organising this initiative has created awareness in the offshore sector and we are confident that others will follow in the footsteps of those that have been on this first programme. The recognition this brings to the professionalism of the sector is vital as the need for effective project management in the sector has never been so critical.”

APM comments

APM Chief Executive Sara Drake said: “Oil and gas is going through turbulence. Now, more than ever, it’s important that oil and gas project professionals can evidence their skills and standards. RPP status and APM qualifications are the best ways of doing this and they are recognised throughout the economy. There’s so much excellent experience in our oil and gas industry. I’m sure plentymore project managers have the potential to reach RPP status.”RPP is just one of various high profile initiatives being delivered by the ECITB in conjunction with the OPMSG. Earlier in 2015 the ECITB launched a pioneering webinar series featuring leading experts and practitioners from the oil and gas industry to promote good practice. This has had a great success and is helping to inspire a dynamic interaction and stronger community. The ECITB was also instrumental last year in bringing together leading industry figures and practitioners at a major offshore conference, focusing on cost reduction and collaboration.
