From natural gas to hydrogen – the conversion of one of the first cross-border hydrogen lines between Vlieghuis in the Netherlands and Ochtrup in Münsterland is starting in Hoogstede. Thyssengas celebrates the groundbreaking ceremony with representatives from politics, municipalities and business.

The Federal Republic is to become climate neutral by 2045. For Thyssengas, it is clear that hydrogen and other green gases are key technologies on this path. In October 2024, the Federal Network Agency approved the hydrogen core network and thus officially gave the starting signal for the construction of a Germany-wide H2 infrastructure.

After intensive planning work, one of the pioneer projects for the energy future is now being realised: By 2027, the approximately 53 km long natural gas pipeline system from Vlieghuis to Ochtrup is to be converted for hydrogen transport. The management project connects the emerging Germany-wide H2 network to the province of Zeeland as well as the important import ports of Amsterdam, Eemshaven and Rotterdam.

"The Germany-wide transport infrastructure for hydrogen is coming and as transmission system operator, we at Thyssengas bear a central responsibility to help build it," emphasises Dr. Thomas Becker, commercial managing director of Thyssengas. "In the future, we bring the hydrogen to where it is needed - to industry, to power plants and to the distribution system operators. And not only for customers directly on the core network, but also in the adjacent regions.”

Ensuring safety plays a decisive role in this. At the groundbreaking event, participants learned about the multi-level safety procedures and 24/7 monitoring, which play a central role in the transition to hydrogen operation. The protection of the environment and nature is also of important importance. The participants were able to gather first impressions of the construction site as part of a joint visit.

In a greeting on the groundbreaking ceremony, the member of the Bundestag, Albert Stegemann, emphasised: "I am very pleased that we in Hoogstede not only talk about the distant goals of the energy transition, but that they are being implemented in practice. With the connection to the hydrogen core network, great opportunities open up for our entire region: We have an optimal geographical location, the infrastructure on site and companies that can benefit from it. The energetic commitment of our local construction companies is already creating the first value creation - that's great." As a transmission system operator, Thyssengas is actively involved in the energy transition in Germany. The Vlieghuis-Ochtrup conversion project is a pioneering project and a further step towards a climate-neutral energy supply.
