The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) has set dates beginning 12 November for the proposed Bakken crude oil pipeline intending to pass through 18 Iowa counties.

The hearing

“The board will consider the question of whether the eminent domain requests to Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners will be granted as part of the hearing, but it is unlikely the board will make a ruling at the conclusion of the hearing,” IUB Spokesman Donald Tormey said.

Those opposed

Opponents of the pipeline have concerns regarding the environment and safety, and have criticised the IUB due to the rushed schedule. According to an Associated Press report, over 2600 statements have been filed against the pipeline.

Energy Transfer Partners

The company requested a permit from the IUB to acquire land to pump crude oil – 570 000 bpd – from fields in North Dakota, across Iowa to Illinois. The Bakken pipeline is set to run 1134 miles and be 30 in. dia.

Energy Transfer Partners wants the pipeline to be in operation by the end of 2016.
