Under protest
Enbridge’s crude oil pipeline – Line 9 – was shut down on Monday due to protestors.
The 40 year old pipeline, which has recently had its 300 000 bpd of flow reversed to enable shipments of oil from the Alberta oilsands to Montreal, came under attack by three protestors.
The site
The three protestors broke into the valve site and tampered with the pipeline valve, before locking themselves to the equipment. The line was shut and the police were called, and upon arrival the protestors were removed.
Alyssa Symons Belanger, a concerned citizen at the demonstration stated: "It's a 40 year old pipeline that's been in the ground that has been leaking in many places in Quebec and in Ontario. We want them to close the line."
Environmental concerns
Recently, more environmental groups have begun protesting against oil and gas pipelines. Kinder Morgan’s Northeast Energy Direct pipeline, the Keystone XL pipelines and TransCanada's Energy East pipeline project are all examples.
In Canada, these groups want to stop the oil reserves from being developed in order to protect the environment as pipelines are posing more challenges to climate change.
