Bechtel has announced its selection by Gulf MP Company Ltd of Thailand to manage construction of pipelines that will feed gas into a network of planned new power generation facilities. Bechtel will manage engineering, procurement and construction for 12 new gas pipelines with receiving stations.

Comments on project

"Bechtel is looking forward to its continued contribution to Thailand's economy through employment of Thai colleagues and further development of the country's energy infrastructure," said Jack Futcher, President of Bechtel's Oil, Gas and Chemicals business unit in Houston. "Our teams will work with Gulf MP Company to deliver pipelines needed to increase energy reliability in the country, building on Bechtel's extensive global expertise."

The contract

The contract was awarded as part of Thailand's Small Power Producer programme in an effort to diversify the country's energy mix and to support industrial energy needs. The 12 new combined-cycle plants will each provide 120 - 130 MW of electric power to industrial users and to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. They will also provide steam to local industrial users. The pipelines will vary in size between eight and 16 in. and in length of 1 - 11 km.

Bechtel has extensive global experience in pipeline construction, having delivered nearly 53 000 miles of pipeline – enough to circle the Earth twice – in the last 50 years. The company is currently building the Escondida Water Supply project in Chile and supporting facilities for the South Caucasus Pipeline extension.
