Enbridge pipelines await federal decisions

World Pipelines,

With federal decisions pending on its postponed Northern Gateway project, Enbridge – Canada’s largest pipeline company – is currently emphasising the importance of oil and gas pipeline safety.

Enbridge’s Chief Executive, Al Monaco, stated: “The fact of the matter is that the additional scrutiny, and the tension - although perhaps uncomfortable - is leading the entire industry, I think, to get better ... Years ago in our industry we would have said, ‘You know, things happen’. And of course they do when you run industrial assets, but we’re very focused today in making sure that we’re striving for zero, zero incidents”

After the recent Husky oil spill, which leaked an excess of 200 000 l of oil into the North Saskatchewan River, pipeline safety is again at the forefront of the news.

Chris Bloomer, President of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, explained: “Let’s get together and talk about it and see how we can improve. Let’s just admit that we need to improve and how do we do that? We do need to try and come together to deal with this, because it’s affecting the pipelines, but the pipelines affect the industry.”

Enbridge is currently waiting for hear final decisions on two of its major pipeline projects in Canada.

On a tangent, following the Alberta wildfire, Enbridge pipelines have seen a decrease in its crude oil flow.

The Fort McMurray wildfire saw evacuations of oilsands and homes, as well as shutdowns of production. However, despite reporting its lower profit, Enbridge is devoted to the construction of its Northern Gateway pipeline project.

Monaco stated: "The Aboriginal equity partners and our commercial project proponents remain fully committed to building this critical Canadian infrastructure project.”
