DNV GL’s solution to pipeline risk analysis

World Pipelines,

Pipeline accidents are relatively common and often result in significant losses. Over the last 20 years, there have been over 100 accidents in the US alone, which has resulted in losses of millions of dollars.

In order to identify the most effective mitigation measures for reducing the risk of accidents in oil and gas pipelines, operators regularly perform quantitative risk analysis (QRA).

QRA work is a resource and time intensive task. DNV GL has recently released its Phast and Safeti hazard and risk assessment software, which has been designed to enhance QRA by cutting calculation times by the introduction of a new pipeline risk model. This will, in turn, enable more efficient speedy and cost saving analysis work.

According to Kenny Shaba, Risk and Reliability Product Manager, Software, DNV GL, the new Phast and Safeti 7.2 software has made QRA significantly faster than before. Setup and analysis time is reduced significantly, which frees up time to interpret results or to execute more projects.

He added that the results provided are more detailed, in turn, proving users with a better understanding of the risks of the pipeline.

The risk model in DNV GL’s new QRA software includes the ability to draw a pipeline on a map. This makes it easy to set up and define. Isolation valves and breaches along the pipeline are defined once and replicated before the program automatically creates relevant scenarios.

“With speedy results, decisions can be made efficiently based on quality data in a timely manner,” says Are Føllesdal Tjønn, CEO, Software at DNV GL.
