WEBINAR - Groundbreaking advances in field joint coating for offshore pipelay
In June 2024, a Malaysia-based oil and gas company launched an offshore pipelay project in Southeast Asia, constructing two high-temperature carbon steel pipelines. For the first time, the Offshore Installation Contractor used the Denso Viscotaq™ Offshore Field Joint Coating (OFJC) system, achieving 1766 hours LTI-free, a record 0.19% repair rate, and application times under five minutes per joint. The system, comprising ViscoWrap™ XHT, Viscotaq™ PE Outerwrap, Denso™ Glass Outerwrap, and Denso Rockmesh™, exceeded ISO 21809-3 standards and streamlined operations, enabling completion three days ahead of schedule with over US$1 million in savings. This presentation explores how this breakthrough cold-applied FJC technology is setting new standards for offshore pipeline construction.
The project, executed in 2024 by a leading Offshore Installation Contractor (OIC), involved installing two sour-rated carbon steel pipelines (254 mm and 304.8 mm diameter) over a combined 40 km. Using a DP3 pipelay barge, the OIC applied the Viscotaq OFJC system – comprising ViscoWrap XHT, Viscotaq PE Outerwrap, Denso Glass Outerwrap, and Denso Rockmesh – for corrosion and mechanical protection. Extensive third-party testing in early 2023 confirmed the system’s compliance with ISO 21809-3 standards, showcasing its durability under 115°C conditions. The OIC’s applicators mastered the system in just two hours, achieving rapid production rates with under five minutes per joint and a record-low repair rate of 0.19%. The project was completed ahead of schedule, saving over US$1 million and proving the effectiveness of cold-applied coatings in offshore environments.
