WEBINAR: One Fiber Optic Cable, Many Threats: Real-World DFOS Lessons from Natural Gas to CO2, Ammonia and Sour Gas

09 November 2026 - 09 November 2026

Pipeline operators must detect smaller events, respond faster, and protect longer assets – even as emerging products such as CO2, ammonia, and sour gas introduce new leak detection challenges. This webinar explores how Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) enables continuous monitoring across long-distance pipelines using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS).

Drawing on real-world applications, including the TANAP and BTC natural gas transmission projects, the presentation will examine how product properties, operating conditions, release physics, and environmental factors influence detectable acoustic and thermal signals. Attendees will learn how DAS and DTS can work together to improve the detection, classification and location of leaks, third-party interference, and other pipeline threats, while providing a practical framework for determining what should be measured along a pipeline – and which sensing technology offers the clearest indication that conditions have changed.

This webinar will examine real-world applications of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), including lessons learned from large-scale natural gas transmission projects, such as TANAP. The discussion will extend to CO2, ammonia, and sour gas, exploring how acoustic energy, temperature change, phase behaviour, and environmental interaction influence distributed sensing signals. Using practical examples, the presentation will show how complementary acoustic and thermal measurements can improve event detection, classification and localisation, and how DFOS is evolving into a multi-application monitoring platform for today's pipelines and the next generation of critical energy infrastructure.
