5000 bbl pipeline oil spill in California

As much as 5000 bbls of crude oil spilled from a pipeline a few miles from the Pacific Ocean in Ventura, Calif., according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The spill was reported in the coastal city between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara early Thursday morning. State and local responders, as well as the US Coast Guard, were working to contain the spill and keep oil from flowing to a state beach a few miles away.

The oil is flowing into a dry creek bed but hasn’t reached the beach, a Ventura County Fire Department spokesman said. A report with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services stated that the pipeline is owned by Crimson Pipeline, a privately owned company based in Long Beach.

Crimson didn’t immediately respond to request for comment. The release comes just over a year after a pipeline owned by Plains All American LP broke open near Santa Barbara, spilling nearly 3000 bbls of crude onto a beach and into the Pacific Ocean.
