US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced US$86 million in grants to enhance states’ pipeline safety programmes.

The funds, administered by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), will help state partners inspect more than 85% of the nation’s 3.3 million mile pipeline network.

“Safety is the number one priority of the Department of Transportation,” said US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “The grants announced today will support our existing partnership with states to support pipeline inspection, keep communities safe, and keep our energy economy moving.”

“PHMSA values its partnership with state regulators who share responsibility for overseeing the nation’s energy transportation infrastructure,” said PHMSA Acting Administrator Ben Kochman. “We remain committed to supporting them through grants, training, and other essential resources needed to accomplish their safety mission.”

For FY 2025, the award amounts are:

  • US$82 million in Pipeline Safety State Base Grants.
  • US$4 million in Underground Natural Gas Storage Grants.

These two formula-based programmes support state enforcement of federal pipeline safety regulations by reimbursing up to 80% of state costs for personnel, equipment, or activities related to pipeline safety inspection and enforcement.
