World Pipelines,
Equinor has awarded the Johan Sverdrup Phase 2 pipeline and umbilical detail engineering contract to IKM Ocean Design. The contract is a continuation of IKM Ocean Design’s long-term involvement in the Johan Sverdrup project, where the company has been involved in all project stages for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the development since 2013.
Phase 1 of the project consist of four field centre platforms and 3 off subsea water injection templates, while Phase 2 consist of an additional Process Platform at the field centre with subsea development of three different satellite areas. Phase 1 production was initiated in October this year, and Johan Sverdrup Phase 2 Project is scheduled for production start-up Q4 2022.
IKM Ocean Design has been responsible for the design of the infield pipelines and spools during the Phase 1 development. In addition, the work has included an overall responsibility for the field layout including umbilicals, cables and export pipelines. For Phase 2 of the development, IKM is responsible for the design of all infield pipelines. The infield pipelines include production lines, gas injection / gas lift lines and water injection pipelines. As for Phase 1, IKM is also responsible for the overall field layout as part of Phase 2 detail design.
CEO of IKM Ocean Design, Peder Hoås, says IKM Ocean Design are very proud that Equinor has chosen to continue the cooperation with IKM Ocean Design for this prestigious contract. Hoås further says that IKM Ocean Design has, over the last years, worked actively to develop improved and new cost-effective technical solutions for its clients and that these important improvements have been necessary to adapt to the current market situation. The Johan Sverdrup Phase 2 Project will be a continuation of the good work carried out in earlier phases of the project and gives us the opportunity to further support Equinor and its partners in the design of the field architecture and subsea solutions for the largest oil discovery on NCS for thirty years.
The contract has a duration of three years (until December 2022) for the completion of detailed design, follow-on and supervision for all pipelines and cables in the field, which means that IKM Ocean design then has been involved in the Johan Sverdrup Project for ten years.
IKM Ocean Design is a part of IKM Gruppen and is established with offices in Stavanger, Trondheim and Oslo. IKM Ocean Design employs 80 engineers within the areas of subsea field development, subsea pipelines and cables, subsea structures and renewable energy engineering.

When the tanks are full, the liquefied carbon dioxide will be loaded onto a dedicated carrier from Royal Wagenborg and shipped to the INEOS Nini platform in the Danish North Sea. From there, it will be safely injected via pipeline into subsurface reservoirs approximately 1800 m beneath the seabed for permanent storage.
