Giant catamaran to carry worn out North Sea oil rigs onshore

After 25 years in the making, Allseas’ giant catamaran will be tasked with decommissioning North Sea oil rigs. The 382 m long and 124 m wide catamaran, named Pieter Schelte after the father of Allseas Group Chief Executive Edward Heerema, is capable of lifting 48 000 t and is set to embark from a South Korean Shipyard in 2014.

The Pieter Schelte’s size and stability give it an advantage in the rough weather of the North. It has been signed up to remove platforms from Shell's Brent North Sea field, beginning with Brent Delta in 2015 or 2016. Over the ship's lifetime decommissioning projects could take it to the Gulf of Mexico, South East Asia and on to Brazil and West Africa.
