ESAB has recognised the service excellence of David Fell, course leader for its popular Gas Inspectors’ Courses, conducted yearly since 1980.

Mr. Fell, one of the UK’s prominent authorities on industrial gas processes, was recently presented The Welding Institute’s Distinguished Service Award for his significant contribution to improving the safety of oxy-fuel gas processes to the development of general fabrication.

Mr. Fell was honoured during The Welding Institute’s Annual Awards and Dinner, 1 July 2014 at King’s College, Cambridge, where more than 200 invited guests from industry and academia were present.

The Welding Institute is the professional division of TWI, one of the world’s foremost independent research and technology organisations with expertise in engineering, materials and joining technologies.

The Welding Institute Awards are presented by the Council of The Welding Institute on an annual basis. Members and Branches are invited to make nominations for the Distinguished Service Award, which is offered in recognition of outstanding contributions to The Welding Institute on a national basis, as a result of which the position of the Institute has been significantly advanced.

David Fell joined TWI in 1965 as a Student Member, was elected Member in 1969 and became a Fellow in 1996. In citing his service excellence, TWI officials stated, “David has spent his whole career involved with oxy-fuel gas processes where he has made an outstanding contribution to oxy-fuel gas safety, mainly through his development of the use of safety devices such as Flashback Arrestors.”

In recent years, Mr. Fell has focused on safety training and has led the Gas Inspectors’ Courses for ESAB since 2004. He has been involved in drafting the courses and their technical content since 1983. These courses offer both theoretical and practical training leading to a qualification as an oxy-fuel gas inspector.

The ESAB/City & Guilds Accredited Gas Inspectors’ courses center on the safety aspects of using oxy-fuel welding gases. In addition, various aspects of industrial gas safety for non-welding gas systems are covered. These two-day courses provide safety training leading to the internationally recognised City & Guilds qualification.
