A potential Greek-Cypriot-Israeli pipeline

Greece, Israel and Cyprus have agreed on 28 January to explore the potential construction of a natural gas pipeline to Europe. This would entail tapping into the gas reserves discovered recently in the Eastern Mediterranean area.

The meeting

Nicos Anastasiades, President of Cyprus, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, all attended a meeting to discuss a joint venture between the trio.

After the meeting, a trilateral agreement had been made; the three countries decided to strengthen their co-operation with one another. There is also an open invitation for other countries to joint, in attempt to promote co-operation and peace.

After researching practical co-operation methods, the trio implemented joint projects; within the energy industry, focussing on the environment, research and technology, and ways of combating terrorism.

"The three-country partnership is not exclusive in design or nature and we are ready to welcome other like-minded actors to join our efforts to promote co-ordination and co-operation, as well as regional peace and stability," Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades stated.

The pipeline

The EuroAsia Interconnector pipeline would transport approximately 2000 MW of natural gas through the 1500 km line, to Europe via Israel, Cyprus and Greece.

Project managers have stated that the first phase would be the construction of a 329 km line, linking Cyprus and Israel.
