Seaway crude oil pipeline project begins
The US$ 2 billion Seaway pipeline project is making its way through Kaufman County, Texas, as crews begin construction of the 512 mile project that will stretch from Oklahoma to coastal Southern Texas.
The Seaway crude oil pipeline project is a joint venture between Enterprise Product Partners (Enterprise) and Enbride Inc. The existing 30 in. pipeline, completed in 1976, travels through Kaufman County and originates in Cushing, Oklahoma. The pipeline travels approximately 500 miles south to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.
In 2012, the direction of the pipeline was reversed from transporting oil from the gulf region to Cushing, Oklahoma. Seaway is now in the process of constructing the Seaway pipeline, described as loop or twin, that will be laid parallel to the existing pipeline. The additional 512 miles of 30 in. pipeline will transport approximately 450 000 bpd of oil and is intended to boost capacity for buyers.
According to Enterprise Products Partners, the pipeline will be laid approximately three to four ft below grade. Rick Rainey, Public Relations at Enterprise Produces, said the pipeline’s purpose is to “bring crude oil that’s stranded in the mid-continent to provide it to mainly Texas and Louisiana refineries.”
