Trudeau to make Trans Mountain decision

World Pipelines,

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau soon must make a political decision on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain oil pipeline.

The National Energy Board (NEB) has recently approved the pipeline expansion project, specifying 157 conditions and 49 environmental requirements that need to be met before the project can commence. Yet, despite the NEB approving the pipeline, the final decision rests with Trudeau's government.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley stated: "This particular pipeline application ought to be considered on the basis of its individual merits, not as a symbol for this much larger issue (of greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta)."

The project has faced an abundance of opposition, from environmental and indigenous groups. And recently, Vancouver has opened a court case against the NEB, claiming the board provided inadequate evidence and ignored the affected communities when it approved the project. More information here.

Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Robertson, stated: "There's obviously a need for a much more robust review. I also believe that the Kinder Morgan proposal is wrong and if the appropriate scientific evidence and community feedback is considered, it will be rejected."

Ali Hounsell, a spokeswoman for the Trans Mountain project, explained: "The NEB confirms in its report that Trans Mountain has met the expectations with regards to aboriginal consultation, and there is sufficient evidence about the fate and behaviour of oil. Ultimately, the NEB weighed all the evidence and recommended the federal government approve the expansion."

No final decision on the expansion project has been made yet.
