A man, allegedly a protester, was reportedly seen shooting a high-powered rifle at the under-construction Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline in Dunnellon (Florida) on 26 February.
The unidentified man is reported to have shot at both the pipeline and nearby equipment but fled into the woods when deputies responded. According to Citrus County’s police, the man had been fatally shot by officers after a vehicle chase.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating the shooting.
The 515 mile Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline stretches from Alabama to central Florida. The under-construction project is a joint venture between Spectra Energy Partners, NextEra Energy, Inc. and Duke Energy.
The project has sparked protest in recent weeks, with two protesters arrested and charged with felony grand theft, trespassing on a construction site and criminal mischief after wedging themselves inside the pipeline.
