NDA strikes again

Niger Delta Avenger (NDA), a militant group in Nigeria, announced on 26 May that they were responsible for another pipeline attack. The natural gas pipeline sabotaged belongs to Chevron.

The NDA group stated in a tweet: "We warned Chevron, but they didn't listen. NDA just blew up the Escravos tank farm main electricity feed pipeline."

The militants are fighting for greater share oil profits, independence for the southern region of Nigeria as well as an end to pollution, and have consequently told oil and gas firms to leave the Delta before the end of May.

As a result of recent oil and gas pipeline attacks, Nigeria’s crude oil production has decreased from approximately 2.2 million bpd to currently around 1.4 million bpd. The country is now no longer Africa’s top oil producer.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, stated: “The Niger Delta governors must be involved in providing lasting solutions to the resurgence of pipeline vandalism and there is urgent need to create business opportunities for the locals in the region.”
