NEB releases Safety and Environmental Performance Dashboard

World Pipelines,

The National Energy Board (NEB) has released a new online Safety and Environmental Performance Dashboard. The Dashboard presents key safety and environmental protection data collected by the NEB as part of its work to hold companies accountable for positive outcomes in these areas.

"People are interested in information about how regulated pipeline companies perform on safety and environmental protection," said NEB Chair and Chief Executive Officer Gaétan Caron. "As one of the concrete actions resulting from our 2013 Safety Forum, the NEB is delivering on its commitment to improve how Canadians get the information that they want and need. We are committed to making this type of information more readily accessible online."

Companies regulated by the Board must anticipate, prevent, mitigate and manage all potential hazards associated with their pipelines. The goal for the Board and all its regulated companies is zero incidents. Data trends show that there has been a 28% decrease in the number of incidents this year over last year. Overall release volumes were significantly down in 2013, and have been declining since 2009.

The NEB evaluates regulated companies, their facilities and activities on an ongoing basis to determine appropriate compliance oversight. The NEB’s risk-informed approach analyses incident data and industry trends in order to focus on areas of the highest priority when planning its compliance and enforcement actions.

The Dashboard will be updated on a quarterly basis. The Board is actively seeking feedback on how well this information meets the public’s needs, and what other types of information would be useful to include.
